Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum: How to Pick the Right Health Insurance Metal Tier for 2027

By Paul Z Olah  |  September 27, 2026

Every ACA marketplace plan for 2027 falls into one of four metal categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. These tiers don’t reflect the quality of care — all marketplace plans must cover the same essential health benefits. Instead, the tier describes how costs are split between you and the insurance company. Here’s how to choose the right one.

How Metal Tiers Work

The metal tier represents the actuarial value — how much, on average, the plan pays vs. what you pay:

  • Bronze (60/40): Plan pays ~60% of costs; you pay ~40%
  • Silver (70/30): Plan pays ~70%; you pay ~30%
  • Gold (80/20): Plan pays ~80%; you pay ~20%
  • Platinum (90/10): Plan pays ~90%; you pay ~10%

Higher tiers = higher monthly premiums, lower out-of-pocket costs when you use healthcare. Lower tiers = lower premiums, more exposure to costs when care is needed.

Bronze Plans: Who They’re For

Bronze plans have the lowest premiums but the highest deductibles (often $5,000–$8,000 or more). They work well for people who:

  • Are young and healthy with minimal expected healthcare use
  • Want to protect against catastrophic events (the true insurance function) without paying for routine care coverage
  • Plan to pair the plan with a Health Savings Account (HDHP-compatible plans)

Silver Plans: The Middle Ground (and Subsidy Sweet Spot)

Silver plans are the most nuanced tier. They’re the only tier eligible for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) — extra help that lowers your deductible, copays, and out-of-pocket maximum if your income is below ~250% of the FPL. If you qualify for CSRs, a Silver plan can function like a Gold or Platinum plan for a Silver price. Always check whether you qualify for CSRs before defaulting to Bronze.

Silver is also the benchmark for calculating premium tax credits. Your credit is based on the second-lowest cost Silver plan in your area.

Gold Plans: Predictable Costs for Regular Healthcare Users

Gold plans have higher premiums but lower deductibles and copays. They’re the right choice if you:

  • Have regular doctor visits, ongoing prescriptions, or predictable annual healthcare costs
  • Want lower out-of-pocket exposure and more predictable monthly budgeting
  • Have already done the math and Gold’s total cost (premium + expected care) beats Silver

Platinum Plans: High-Use or High-Risk

Platinum plans have the highest premiums and the lowest out-of-pocket costs. They make mathematical sense primarily for people with chronic conditions, planned surgeries, or very high annual healthcare utilization — where the reduced cost-sharing more than offsets the premium premium.

Which Tier Is Right for You?

There’s no universally correct answer. The right tier depends on your income (subsidy eligibility), your expected healthcare use, your risk tolerance, and the specific plan options in your area. A licensed broker can run the numbers on your specific situation to show you the real total cost of each tier — premium plus expected out-of-pocket — before you commit.
