Meet Your Benefits

Paul Z Olah
I started Garden State Benefits because I got frustrated watching small business owners get shortchanged by brokers who only showed up at renewal time. I've seen the damage that passive, transactional broker relationships cause — confusion at open enrollment, unanswered claims questions, employees who don't understand their benefits, and employers who feel like they're managing their benefits plan completely alone.
That's not what a broker should be. A broker should be a partner — someone who's genuinely invested in your employees' wellbeing and your company's success. Someone who picks up the phone when you call, shows up when it matters, and proactively brings you the information you need instead of waiting to be asked.
That's the standard I hold myself to at Garden State Benefits. When you call me, you get me. Not a call center, not an assistant taking a message, not a voicemail. You get your broker. I think that matters — and my clients have told me it does.
I specialize in group benefits for small businesses: 2 to 50 employees, across a wide range of industries. I work with businesses in New Jersey and across 26 states, and I understand the specific pressures that small business owners face — tight margins, competing for talent against larger employers, managing HR without an HR department, and trying to keep employees healthy and satisfied without blowing the budget.
My approach is straightforward: I learn your business, I shop the market, I explain your options in plain English, and I stay engaged year-round. No jargon. No pressure. No disappearing act after the plan is in place.
I'm proud to be licensed in 26 states and to work with clients across the country. Wherever your business is, if you're looking for a benefits broker who actually does the job, I'd love to talk.
People Over Processes
Everything we do is built around one idea: insurance should serve the people who need it, not the other way around. Here's what that means in practice.
Real Relationships
We build long-term relationships with our clients, not transactional interactions. Our goal is to still be your broker five years from now — not because we locked you in, but because we earned it every year.
Radical Transparency
We tell you how we're compensated, what your options are, and why we're recommending what we're recommending. No hidden agendas. If a different carrier is better for you, we'll tell you — even if it means less commission.
Always Reachable
Your call goes to Paul. Always. We know that insurance questions often come up at inconvenient times — during a claim, after a doctor's visit, during onboarding. We make sure you can always get a real answer.
Year-Round Engagement
We check in throughout the year — not just at renewal. Mid-year reviews, compliance updates, employee changes, claims advocacy. We're working for you 365 days a year.
Plain Language, Always
Insurance is full of jargon, and we think that's a problem. We translate the complexity into plain language so you and your employees can make informed decisions — without needing a dictionary.
Your Advocate
When your employee has a billing dispute or a claim problem, we don't just hand them a phone number. We get on the phone with the carrier and advocate for the right outcome. That's what a partner does.
What to Expect When You Work with Garden State Benefits
From Day One
When you first reach out, we start with a conversation — not a form. We want to understand your business before we start talking about plans. How many employees do you have? Are they spread across different states? Do you have part-time workers? What's your current benefits situation? What's your budget look like?
Once we understand your needs, we go to work. We pull quotes from multiple carriers, build out comparison documents in plain language, and schedule a call to walk through the options. You ask questions. We answer them. You make the decision that's right for your business.
At Open Enrollment
Open enrollment is where a lot of brokers drop the ball. Forms get sent out, employees are confused, and the employer ends up fielding questions they don't know how to answer. We handle it differently.
We build a benefits guide your employees can actually read. We host an enrollment meeting — in person or virtually, whatever works for your team — and walk through the plans, the costs, and how to use their benefits. We take questions. We make sure everyone who needs to enroll actually enrolls. You don't have to manage it alone.
Throughout the Year
Mid-year, we check in. We look at any plan changes, address any issues that have come up, and make sure everything is still working as expected. If an employee has a claim problem or a billing dispute, they come to us. We advocate on their behalf with the carrier — and we win more often than not.
We also keep you up to date on regulatory changes that may affect your plan — ACA updates, state-level changes, annual notice requirements. You shouldn't have to track all of that yourself. That's part of what you're getting when you work with an engaged broker.
At Renewal
Thirty to sixty days before your renewal date, we do a full market review. We pull current pricing from multiple carriers, compare it to your existing coverage, benchmark it against the market, and present you with a clear picture of your options. If we can save you money without sacrificing coverage, we will. If your current plan is still the best option, we'll tell you that too.
Renewal is not just a signature on a form. It's an opportunity to re-evaluate and make sure your plan is still serving your team well. We take that seriously.
