What Is the ACA Marketplace and How Does It Work?

By Paul Z Olah  |  August 25, 2026

The ACA marketplace (also called the exchange) is where individuals and families who don’t get insurance through an employer can shop for and purchase health coverage. If you’ve never used it before, here’s a clear explanation of how it works.

Federal vs. State Marketplaces

Some states operate their own marketplace (like GetCoveredNJ for New Jersey), while most states use the federal marketplace at healthcare.gov. The underlying plans and subsidy rules are the same — only the website and administration differ.

Who Can Use the Marketplace?

The marketplace is open to U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants who:

  • Are not incarcerated
  • Live in the United States
  • Are not eligible for Medicare (under 65, or under 65 without disability qualifying coverage)

You can use the marketplace even if your employer offers coverage — but you’ll only be eligible for subsidies if your employer’s plan is unaffordable under the ACA definition.

What the Marketplace Offers

  • ACA-compliant health plans from multiple carriers (bronze through platinum tiers)
  • Dental-only plans for adults and children
  • Premium tax credit calculation and application
  • Cost-Sharing Reduction eligibility for Silver plans
  • Medicaid and CHIP eligibility screening

How Enrollment Works

You create an account, enter your household information and income, and the marketplace shows you your subsidy amount and available plans. You compare and enroll — it takes about 30–60 minutes if you have your information ready.

Open Enrollment Window

The federal marketplace open enrollment window for 2027 coverage runs November 1 – January 15, 2027. Enrolling by December 15 gives you January 1 coverage; enrolling between December 16 and January 15 gives you February 1 coverage.

Using a Broker

Certified brokers can shop and enroll on your behalf through the marketplace — at no cost to you. Many people find the process easier with a broker guiding them.
