What Is an HSA — and How Does It Work With Your Individual Health Plan?

By Paul Z Olah  |  August 20, 2026

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is one of the most powerful tax-advantaged tools available — and it pairs specifically with high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) available on the ACA marketplace. If you’re choosing a plan for yourself or your family, understanding HSAs can significantly change your calculus.

What Is an HSA?

An HSA is a personal savings account you can fund with pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical expenses. Unlike a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), HSA funds roll over indefinitely — there’s no “use it or lose it” deadline. The account belongs to you and moves with you regardless of your health plan status.

Who Can Open an HSA?

To open and contribute to an HSA, you must be:

  • Enrolled in an HSA-eligible High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
  • Not enrolled in Medicare
  • Not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return
  • Not covered by any non-HDHP health plan (including a spouse’s non-HDHP FSA in some cases)

2026 HSA Contribution Limits

  • Individual coverage: $4,300
  • Family coverage: $8,550
  • Catch-up contribution (age 55+): additional $1,000

The Triple Tax Advantage

HSAs are the only account with a triple tax benefit:

  1. Contributions are tax-deductible (or pre-tax via payroll)
  2. Growth is tax-free
  3. Withdrawals are tax-free when used for qualified medical expenses

HSA as a Retirement Strategy

If you can afford to pay current medical expenses out of pocket and let your HSA grow, you’re building a tax-free fund for future healthcare costs. After age 65, you can withdraw HSA funds for any purpose (paying ordinary income tax, like a traditional IRA), making the HSA a powerful retirement vehicle.

On the Marketplace

Look for the “HSA-eligible” designation when shopping marketplace plans. Not all HDHPs qualify — the IRS sets minimum deductible and maximum out-of-pocket thresholds that must be met.
