NJ FamilyCare vs. Marketplace Plans 2027: Which Is Right for You?

By Paul Z Olah  |  October 12, 2026

Should you apply for NJ FamilyCare or shop on NJ Get Covered for 2027? The answer depends on income. Here’s how to find out where you land and what each program actually offers.

What Is NJ FamilyCare?

NJ FamilyCare is New Jersey’s Medicaid and CHIP program. It provides free or very low-cost coverage to eligible residents. Unlike marketplace plans, NJ FamilyCare has no open enrollment window — apply any time.

2027 Income Thresholds

Population FamilyCare Income Limit
Children under 19 Up to 355% FPL (~$105k family of 4)
Pregnant women Up to 205% FPL
Parents/caretakers Up to 138% FPL (~$20,120 single)
Other adults Up to 138% FPL (~$20,120 single)

The Marketplace Is for Higher-Income Residents

Above the FamilyCare thresholds, NJ Get Covered marketplace plans apply. Depending on income you may qualify for APTC, CSR, and NJ’s state subsidy — making Silver-tier plans especially affordable.

Near the Borderline? Watch for These Issues

  • Enrolling in FamilyCare then having income rise = you may need to switch mid-year via a Special Enrollment Period
  • Intentionally underreporting income to qualify for Medicaid can create legal liability
  • For 138–250% FPL: Silver marketplace plans with CSR often provide comparable quality to Medicaid at a low premium
