Individual Health Insurance Open Enrollment: What You Need to Know

By Paul Z Olah  |  August 6, 2026

If you buy your own health insurance — rather than getting it through an employer — then ACA Open Enrollment is the most important annual event on your benefits calendar. Here’s a plain-language overview of how it works.

What Is ACA Open Enrollment?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created a structured enrollment window each year during which individuals and families can purchase health insurance through the federal or state marketplaces (also called exchanges). Outside of this window, you generally cannot enroll unless you experience a qualifying life event.

For 2027 coverage, the federal marketplace (HealthCare.gov) open enrollment window runs November 1 – January 15. Several states with their own exchanges have slightly different dates.

Who This Applies To

Individual open enrollment is for people who are:

  • Self-employed or freelance workers
  • Employees whose employer doesn’t offer health coverage
  • Employees who don’t qualify for or can’t afford their employer’s plan
  • Individuals between jobs
  • Early retirees not yet eligible for Medicare
  • Anyone who purchases their own coverage independently

Where to Buy Individual Coverage

Individual plans are available through the ACA marketplace (healthcare.gov or your state’s exchange) or directly from carriers off-marketplace. Marketplace plans are the only ones that qualify for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, which can dramatically lower your cost.

The Key Advantage: Subsidies

Depending on your household income, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that reduces your monthly premium — sometimes to $0. These subsidies are only available through the marketplace.

Working With a Broker

An independent broker like Garden State Benefits can help you compare plans, calculate your subsidy eligibility, and enroll — at no cost to you. Brokers are compensated by carriers, not by clients.
