How to Switch Health Insurance Plans During 2027 Open Enrollment

By Paul Z Olah  |  October 8, 2026

Open Enrollment is the one time each year when you can switch marketplace health insurance plans without a qualifying life event. The 2027 window runs November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027. Here’s how to make a plan switch cleanly.

Why Switch Plans?

Even if you’re generally satisfied with your current plan, there are good reasons to review your options each year:

  • Your current plan’s premium increased significantly for 2027
  • The plan’s network changed — your provider is no longer in-network
  • Your drug is now on a higher formulary tier
  • Your income changed, affecting your subsidy and the best plan tier for your situation
  • A different plan now offers better value for your healthcare use profile
  • You had a bad experience with the plan’s coverage or claims process

How Switching Works

Switching plans during Open Enrollment is straightforward on the marketplace:

  1. Log into your existing marketplace account (HealthCare.gov, Get Covered NJ, or your state exchange)
  2. Update your income estimate and household information for 2027
  3. Browse all available 2027 plans — you’re not limited to the same carrier
  4. Select a new plan and confirm enrollment
  5. Pay the first premium to the new insurer
  6. Cancel or don’t pay the old plan’s renewal (non-payment will lapse the old plan, or you can actively cancel)

If you do nothing during Open Enrollment, most plans auto-renew — either the same plan (if available) or a similar plan selected by the marketplace. Auto-renewal is rarely the optimal choice.

Continuity of Care During a Switch

When switching plans and carriers, confirm your healthcare providers are in-network on the new plan before you switch. Key providers to verify:

  • Primary care physician
  • All specialists you see regularly
  • Hospitals you’d use for surgery or emergency care
  • Pharmacies and drug formulary for your prescriptions

For ongoing care, ask providers for referrals or care summaries to minimize any administrative friction in the transition.

What Happens to In-Progress Deductibles

When you switch plans, your deductible progress resets to zero on January 1. If you’ve met most of your 2026 deductible by December, factor this into your timing decision — you might want to front-load any planned procedures in December while your current plan’s deductible is met.
