How to Handle a Gap in Health Insurance Coverage

By Paul Z Olah  |  August 24, 2026

Coverage gaps happen — between jobs, during transitions, when plans are missed. Here’s how to minimize the risk during a gap and what options exist to bridge it.

First: Check If You Have a Special Enrollment Period

Before assuming you need to go uninsured, check whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Many events that cause coverage gaps — job loss, aging off a parent’s plan, divorce — also trigger a SEP that lets you enroll in a new plan immediately. Don’t assume you have to wait for November.

Options During a Coverage Gap

COBRA Continuation

If you lost employer-sponsored coverage, COBRA lets you continue that exact plan for up to 18 months at full cost. It’s expensive, but it provides continuity. You have 60 days to elect COBRA, and coverage is retroactive — meaning if you need care during the election window, you can elect COBRA and have it apply retroactively to the date your coverage ended.

Medicaid

If your income is low enough, Medicaid is available year-round with no enrollment window. If you’re in a Medicaid-expansion state and your income has dropped, you may qualify immediately.

Spouse’s Employer Plan

Loss of your own coverage is a qualifying event that allows you to join your spouse’s employer plan mid-year. This can often be faster and cheaper than marketplace enrollment.

Managing Risk During a Short Gap

If your gap is genuinely short (a week or two between jobs with new employer coverage starting shortly), the risk of going uninsured is lower — though never zero. Things to avoid during an uninsured gap:

  • Skipping urgent care when you need it — minor issues become major ones
  • Delaying prescription refills — run out mid-gap and you pay full price
  • Extreme physical activity with elevated injury risk

Don’t Let the Gap Become Permanent

The biggest risk of a coverage gap isn’t the gap itself — it’s letting it become a habit. People who go uninsured for a short period often stay uninsured longer than intended.
