Getting Ready for November: Your Individual Open Enrollment Prep Guide

By Paul Z Olah  |  August 29, 2026

ACA open enrollment opens November 1. That may seem like months away — but the best outcomes come from preparing now, not scrambling in November. Here’s what to do before open enrollment begins.

Review What You Have This Year

Before shopping for new coverage, evaluate your current plan. Ask yourself:

  • Did I hit my deductible this year? How close did I come?
  • Were my doctors and specialists all in-network?
  • Did my prescriptions get covered without issues?
  • Did I have any claim denials or billing problems?
  • Is this plan still meeting my healthcare needs?

Estimate Your 2027 Income

Your subsidy for 2027 coverage is based on your projected 2027 income. If you’re employed, use your expected salary. If self-employed, estimate your net income. If you expect a significant income change — job change, retirement, business growth — factor it in. Accurate income reporting prevents a tax-time surprise.

Update Your Provider List

Is your current doctor still your doctor? Have you added specialists, therapists, or other providers you want to keep? Make a current list so you can verify each provider’s network status when comparing plans.

Review Your Medications

Pull together a list of all prescriptions you take regularly. Bring the medication name, dosage, and how often you take it. Formularies change year to year — a drug that was Tier 1 last year may be Tier 3 next year.

Decide on Coverage Priorities

Think about what matters most to you: lowest monthly premium, lowest deductible, broadest network, HSA eligibility, specific coverage types. Having clarity on your priorities speeds up plan comparison significantly.

Contact Your Broker Early

Brokers get busy in November and December. Reaching out now — in August or September — means you get more attention and time to make a thoughtful decision rather than rushing at the last minute.
