You don’t have to wait for November’s open enrollment to get health insurance. If you’ve had a significant life change, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that allows you to enroll in coverage right now.
What Triggers a Special Enrollment Period?
The ACA allows you to enroll outside of open enrollment if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Common triggers include:
- Loss of health coverage: Losing job-based coverage, aging off a parent’s plan, losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility, or losing coverage through a spouse
- Changes in household size: Marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, or death of a dependent
- Changes in residence: Moving to a new ZIP code or county, moving to or from a place that affects your plan options
- Changes in eligibility: Gaining citizenship or lawful immigrant status, release from incarceration, becoming a Native American/Alaska Native
- Income changes that affect subsidy eligibility
- Errors or problems with marketplace enrollment
How Long Do You Have?
Most qualifying life events give you a 60-day window — starting either 60 days before or after the event — to enroll in a new marketplace plan. Don’t wait until the last minute; if you need coverage to start on the first of the month, your enrollment deadline may be earlier than you think.
What Documentation Do You Need?
The marketplace will ask you to verify the qualifying event. Depending on the trigger, you may need to provide:
- Letter from your employer confirming loss of coverage and the termination date
- Birth certificate or adoption papers
- Marriage or divorce certificate
- Proof of new address
Don’t Assume You Have to Wait
Many people who experience a life change don’t realize they can enroll immediately. If something has changed in your life, it’s worth checking whether you have a current SEP open.
