Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum: How ACA Metal Tiers Actually Work

By Paul Z Olah  |  August 7, 2026

When shopping for an individual health plan on the ACA marketplace, you’ll immediately notice that plans are organized into four metal tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Understanding how these tiers work is essential to picking the right plan.

What the Metal Tiers Represent

The metal tier represents the cost-sharing split between you and the insurance company for covered services. It does NOT represent the quality of care or network size.

  • Bronze: Insurance pays ~60%, you pay ~40%. Lowest premiums, highest out-of-pocket costs when you use care.
  • Silver: Insurance pays ~70%, you pay ~30%. Mid-range premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
  • Gold: Insurance pays ~80%, you pay ~20%. Higher premiums, lower out-of-pocket when you use care.
  • Platinum: Insurance pays ~90%, you pay ~10%. Highest premiums, lowest out-of-pocket costs.

The Silver Tier Is Special

Silver plans have a unique advantage: they’re the only tier eligible for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs). If your income is between 100–250% of the Federal Poverty Level, enrolling in a Silver plan can unlock dramatically lower deductibles and copays. For people who qualify, a Silver plan often provides far more value than its premium suggests.

How to Choose Your Tier

The right tier depends on how much healthcare you use:

  • Healthy, low utilization: Bronze may make sense — you pay low premiums and rarely hit the deductible.
  • Moderate utilization or CSR eligible: Silver is often the best value.
  • High utilization, chronic conditions, or predictable major expenses: Gold or Platinum saves money in total when you factor in the services you’ll actually use.

Don’t Just Look at the Premium

The cheapest monthly premium isn’t always the cheapest plan. Calculate your expected total annual cost (premiums + estimated out-of-pocket) for each tier to find the true best value.
